You may think Athens is a town exclusively for college students, but there's more to it than football and late-night study sessions. On our visit, we discovered fun playgrounds, nature trails and other kid-friendly fun. Sandy Creek Nature CenterÂKids can explore 225 acres of woodlands and wetlands that lead all the way to the North Oconee River. The Education and Visitor Center includes live reptiles, amphibians, marine and freshwater aquariums and interactive natural history exhibits for a day full of learning about Georgia's native wildlife. 205 Old Commerce Rd., Athens. 706-613-3615. Free. Backpack Campus TourLet your kids to bring their backpacks and pretend they are in college for the day.  Tour North Campus, starting on Broad Street and walk around the famous arch (legend has it that only those who  graduated from The University of Georgia may walk beneath the Arch). Then, walk down to the Tate Student Center and University Bookstore for a snack and some Bulldog gear. Kids will marvel at the size of UGA's football stadium, Sanford Stadium, and imagine the roars and cheers of the 90,000+ fans in the stadium on gamedays. Bear Hollow ZooMeet Opossums, black bears, bald eagles and more who have been rescued from the wild and are native to Georgia. See the Dawgs play baseball at Foley Field and Basketball or Gymnastics at Stegman Coliseum (affectionately known as the Stegosaurus for its old-school 1960s design).
